Dude, Please.

Prodigal Sun Productions is casting This is the New American Theatre, a satirical look at contemporary theatre. Danny XXXXX, dir. Rehearses through May; runs June 1-30 at The Brick Theater in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY. Seeking—Astrid: late 20s-early 30s, smart, funny, free-spirited, flirtatious actress-dir. (full non-sexual nudity required); Marcy: early to mid-20s, wholesome, all-American, ambitious actress (full non-sexual nudity required). Auditions will be held by appt. Send pix & résumés ASAP (April 20 at the latest) to Danny XXXXX, Prodigal Sun Productions, 273 XXXXX, Brooklyn, NY 11215; or email to (keep image files under 100k). Possible pay.

You want 2 hot chicks to get naked for your play, who's premise makes no sense (American Theatre is still male-dominated, not naked-chick-dominated), in Williamsburg where NO ONE will come see it, and you can't even make an effort to definitely pay these girls? Man, take out a cash advance on your credit card if you have to, and at least pay your talent a $50 stipend for being good sports.

As the aforementioned "dude", a couple of clarifications are in order:

a) my father is dead, so requests to use his credit card will meet fall on deaf ears, I'm afraid.

b) the word "possible," in my dictionary, is not a direct synonym to "no."

As it turns out, the actresses in this show ARE being paid (from a source other than "Daddy's credit card") and they are being paid several times the figure you quote. This being the case, if your particular objection is the absence of pay, you can rest assured that this is not another case of exploitation. The presence of nudity in this particular show is, in fact, a satire of the exploitative artists who you seem to despise, and I certainly do.

Since (as you had no way of knowing, not knowing the facts of the matter) the central assertion of this blog entry, that the actresses in my show are not being paid, is untrue, I would respectfully ask that you either delete this entry, or at the very least print a retraction (or whatever it is one does on blogs). I also invite you to come see the show (I will pay for your ticket) so you can see that your fears regarding exploitation are unfounded, which should come as a relief.

I wish you success in your acting career, and in finding respectful collaborators.

That's awesome that you're paying them, and if I may speak for all women everywhere who often face exploitation - we appreciate the consideration.

I only refer to the audition notice as it is posted - so if it doesn't state definite pay... then that's what I respond to. In the future you may want to have a clearer audition notice, as you may end up keeping away actresses that may otherwise be interested and very qualified.

Best of luck to you, too.
